Search is changing. Instead of scrolling through ten blue links, more people now read a single AI-written answer from ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, or a similar tool. That answer might recommend a handful of businesses, and if yours isn't one of them, you may never get the chance to compete.
That's where generative engine optimization (GEO) comes in.
What is GEO?
GEO is the practice of making your content easy for AI tools to find, understand, trust, and cite when they generate answers. It builds on traditional SEO rather than replacing it. The same fundamentals still matter, like a technically healthy site, useful content, and a strong reputation. GEO adds a focus on how AI reads and reuses what you publish.
How GEO differs from traditional SEO
- SEO aims to rank your pages in the search results so people click through to your site.
- GEO aims to get your business and your information included in the answer itself, often with a link or mention as the source.
In practice, the work overlaps a lot. A page that clearly answers a question tends to help with both.
How to make your content AI-friendly
- Answer questions directly. Put a clear, plain answer near the top of the page, then add detail.
- Use clear structure. Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, and lists make content easier to understand and quote.
- Show your expertise. Include real experience, examples, and who's behind the business.
- Be specific about who and where. Name your services, the types of customers you serve, and your area.
- Add an FAQ section built from questions customers actually ask you.
- Use structured data to describe your business, services, and FAQs in a machine-readable way.
- Keep content current and remove or update outdated pages.
Check that your website isn't accidentally blocking AI crawlers. Some security plugins and robots.txt settings block them without you realizing it.
Build trust beyond your website
AI tools look for signals that others trust you, too. Reviews, consistent directory listings, and mentions on reputable local and industry websites all make it more likely an AI tool will recommend you.
Where to start
Start with the pages that matter most, usually your homepage and main service pages, and make sure they clearly answer who you are, what you do, and where. Then add an FAQ and work outward.
GEO is a big part of the AI search optimization work I do for clients: structuring your content so tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI can understand, trust, and recommend your business.
